The Missouri Zen Center store came about over many decades based on products that members and friends asked about. In the beginning, we ordered or made these products for our members only. Gradually, we opened it up to family and friends. Occasionally, at the request of a wellness or yoga store, we have filled larger orders for retail. We don’t have an online store and we only accept cash or check but you can contact us at the phone number above to place an order for any products you see below.

For inquiries email us at info@missourizencenter.org. For book or merchandise orders, please mail your order request with a check to Missouri Zen Center at 220 Spring Avenue, Webster Groves, MO 63119.

Zafu and Zabuton

These hand-made zafus and zabutons are used by Missouri Zen Center members, and are occasionally offered through boutique stores. The construction is authentic, and is the same way zafus and zabutons are made in Japanese temples today. Because they are hand made, quantities are limited, and delivery date is determined by the backlog of orders we have.

$9.00

You Have to Say Something

Dainin Katagiri
"You are Buddha, so learn to behave as a Buddha. Go beyond your self-centered ideas, your likes and dislikes." So begins a section in the essay, "Bodhi Mind," by the influential American Zen master Katagiri. Though these instructions sound easy, these collected essays are not for the beginner. The anthology's no-nonsense style and approach hit the reader like a slap with a stick from a Zen meditation teacher correcting one's posture in Zen meditation. While erudite and informed, these essays lack any humor and warmth that might entice the novice to sample the delights of Zen even further. The lessons stare up at you like figures from a spreadsheet, demanding a reader's uncritical acceptance. The essays read like the thoughts of a Zen bureaucrat rather than a lover of this rich and profound path to self-knowledge. —From Publishers Weekly
(Note: Katigiri is “Jikai Dainin” in our lineage recitation.)
$9.00

I recommend this book to all Zen practitioners and to anyone who wishes to enrich and ripen their life.”—Shohaku Okumura Roshi, Director, Soto Zen Buddhism International Center
